I know I'm a little biased, being an Astros fan, but just look at the numbers. He was a starter in the Minor Leagues until his last few weeks with the Triple-A club in 2004, just before he was called up to the Astros. He had a terrible year last year, and he's been on the decline for quite a while. Plus, there's nothing worse than a washed up player bringing his well-documented prima donna attitude into a harmonious clubhouse. The Astros don't need the lack of production or the aggravation. I know that Lidge and Wheeler are awesome pitchers, but I'm concerned that having to pitch in competition as opposed to Spring Training is not what the Astros need right now. And think of this -- what happens if Wheeler and Lidge get hurt? But the relief pitchers I've talked to have said that they never throw at less than 100 percent, even during exhibition games. If you're a starter, I suppose you can scale back a bit as you're building your arm strength, but for relievers, they're used to all or nothing. I know that it's as of right now, but that concerns me. I don't mean to be overly critical of Astacio, but I never saw him pitch a game last year in which his stuff was good. I just do not see how the club could consider him as a starter. I see that last year was his first year, so maybe I am being too harsh. Manager Phil Garner and pitching coach Jim Hickey agree that Astacio was one pitch away from being good every time out last year. Astacio is vulnerable to the home run, most of which came on fastballs that were up in the zone last year.
