Having missed out on playing the first part of the season together due to Shvedova having a knee injury, the two are seeded third at this year’ s Open, and have not dropped a set en route to reaching the quarterfinals. “ It feels really good to be back here,” King told USOpen.org. “We played a great first match and had a lot of fun. That’s what we did last year so we’ re just taking it one match at a time.” Shvedova, nicknamed "Slava," admitted to being anxious when the two took the court for their first-round match this past Tuesday. “I was a little nervous because we didn’t know our opponents and how they would play,” said Shvedova. “Sometimes I forget how good Vania and I are together and how we can play. We have good chemistry and we’re playing well. Everything is working out, and we’re winning.” Their compatibility on-court is just as translucent when the two are together off-court, creating a winning formula. In addition to capturing two Grand Slam titles, King and Shvedova qualified for the year-end WTA Championships in Qatar last year, have been ranked as high as No. 3 and No. 4 respectively, and were the top seeds at Wimbledon in June. “We have such an easygoing relationship. We never fight and always support each other,” said Shvedova. Although Shvedova is six inches taller than King, the two emulate twin-like qualities, evident by King’s description of their close friendship. “She’s one of my best friends. She always knows what I’m going to do before I do it. Like, she’ll know I’m going to lose something and will pick it up and put it in a place I’ll find it. Then I’ll think, ‘Oh I found it,’ but then I realize it was her who put it there for me to locate.” King and Shvedova reached the semifinals at the French Open, but were unable to repeat their 2010 performance at the All England Club, falling in the second round of Wimbledon. After leaving London, the two took different paths to prepare for the summer hard-court season. King played World TeamTennis for three weeks with the Sacramento Capitals, helping the Caps qualify for the playoffs. “I played World TeamTennis again. It wasn’t meant to be my full preparation for the summer but it sort of turned out that way,” King said. “ I was a bit tired after so I wanted some time to prepare for the summer events, so I didn’t start again until San Diego.” Meanwhile, Shvedova trained in Florida, staying at King’s home. “When I was doing my preparation for the US Open Series in Florida, I stayed at her place but she wasn’t there,” said the Kazakhstani. “I was thinking about her and being in her home, missing her. Then when I left to play a tournament, she came back. She’s a very great girl. I always miss her when we’re playing at different events.” The two rejoined forces in Cincinnati and played solid throughout the tournament to win their first title of the season, edging Natalie Grandin and Vladimira Uhlirova 6-4, 3-6, 11-9 in the final. It was their first title since hoisting the trophy in New York last year, providing an extra boost of confidence heading into this year’s Open. “We had matches we won which is always nice,” said King. “The final was really tough. It was good for confidence to come here with a string of wins. But we go on court with the priority to have fun and enjoy being out there, because that’s when we play our best.” Prior to beginning their US Open campaign, King and Shvedova planned on spending their two days off together in the city, but Hurricane Irene had other ideas. The Saturday and Sunday when the hurricane was here were our two days off. Vania was really mad, haha,” revealed Shvedova. “On Saturday before the hurricane arrived, I came to the grounds to practice. I called Vania at 10 am to see if she was coming, and she said, 'Uhhhh, I’m sleeping!' I was like, 'Oh sorry, I didn’t know.' She responded, 'I decided not to come!'” It’s safe to say King hasn’t been asleep on court. The 22-year-old dominated Jarmila Gajdosova in an impressive second-round singles performance, dropping two games in 62 minutes of play. She faced off against world No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki on Arthur Ashe Stadium in the third round, losing 6-2, 6-4 to the Dane. Though she had already played two doubles matches with Shvedova prior to bowing out to Wozniacki (as well as a loss in mixed doubles with Rohan Bopanna), balancing singles and doubles isn’t a problem for King, who credits an open line of communication with Shvedova for making it easy to find equilibrium with the two disciplines. “I think we do a good job of [communicating],” says the Boynton Beach, Florida, resident. “We discuss with each other what our schedules are going to be like. Most of the time we have a similar schedule, so there’s generally no conflict. There’s occasions when the singles affects doubles, where we can’t play a particular tournament. We know we’re good enough in doubles that it will always be there, but singles is definitely our priority.” King and Shvedova are showing fans why they are the defending champions, losing just 13 games through three matches after dismissing teenage Americans Jessica Pegula and Taylor Townsend 6-4, 6-2 in the third round Monday. If they can maintain their level of play and keep having fun, King and Shvedova could very well become the first women’s doubles duo to win back-to-back titles since Virginia Ruano Pascual and Paola Suarez pulled off the feat in 2003-2004. --
