Keown was part of the famous Arsenal Back Four in the days when the Gunners had the meanest defence in football. But he has hit out at critics who consistently blame the current defence of Clichy, Squillaci, Koscielny and Sagna for Arsenal’s frustrating season. The Gunners remain in contention for the title ahead of today’s crucial clash against Chelsea at the Emirates but have kept only four clean sheets in the league all season and have been unable to show the kind of consistency required to be potential champions. However Keown believes it’s time to look beyond the back four for the answer to their problems. He said: “There’s lots of talk about the back four but I think they need to be a bit more demanding of the people that play in front of them and certainly those in wide positions. “I think the wide players can do more to help, and our attitude used to be the more they do in front of us, the less we do. “It’s ok wanting to play with the ball, but you have to play without it. You need to defend as a team.” Keown, who played over 300 games for Arsenal, winning three Premiership titles and three FA Cups under Arsene Wenger was also a member of the 2004 “ Invincibles” side that went an entire league season without defeat. And he believes that Arshavin in particular must improve his workrate if Arsenal want to get back to those kind of levels. “He’s one of the biggest culprits really in terms of switching off when the ball goes out of play,” said Keown. “I think had he been playing in our team, someone would’ve had a word in his ear and said ‘Listen, fantastic what your doing in possession, we know they’re your strengths, but you have to work for the team as well.’ “It’s a balancing act. We had Marc Overmars who was equally gifted - maybe even more gifted - when going forward with incredible pace and wasn’t overly keen to defend, but he would have to have to put his stint in for the side. You have got to put a shift in. “These days if you compare Arsenal to the likes of Barcelona, you simply can ’t accuse Iniesta or Xavi of not working hard enough when they’re out of possession. I think that if they can do it, then anyone can do it. “You win together, you lose together. The full backs are able to attack with great venom and great energy, so why can’t the wide players defend with the same energy? “It’ abouts a willingness to work for one another. You can’t carry any passengers and I just think one or two of them could do a bit more when they’ re not in possession. “ Keown describes the current Arsenal defence as a ‘work in progress’ but having worked closely with Wenger, he thinks the Gunners boss will not panic buy in January and sees no reason why they cannot challenge for the title without making big-name signings. “Arsene can see whatever we can see, don’t worry about that – in fact he’ s normally one step ahead. He’s given these players an opportunity, so he’s got to believe in them and he’s got to bring the best out of them. He does that by trusting them 100per cent and not questioning what they do. “I think if anything he may buy in the summer. You’re not really certain of what you’re getting in January and clubs tend to panic buy. Arsenal is very measured in his transfer policy. “I still believe this Arsenal team can win the title; of course they can. They’re in the hunt.
