Gunners to talk Wenger terms
By Chris Stanton - Created on 10 Sep 2006
Arsenal's sluggish start to the season will have no bearing on the club's
determination to tie Arsene Wenger down to a new long-term contract.
Gunners chairman Peter-Hill Wood has reiterated the club will open contract
negotiations with Wenger next summer in a bid to extend his contract which by
then will have only another 12 months left to run.
Wenger has overhauled The Gunners in almost 10 years in charge, winning three
Premiership titles, and introducing a style of football revered by neutrals.
If Wenger's side do have an Achilles heel, then it is their over-elaboration
- a criticism which has again been levied at the club following a
disappointing start to the season.
Saturday's 1-1 home draw with Middlesbrough means The Gunners are still
without a league win after their first three matches - not that Hill-Wood is
too concerned, however.
"I am confident we will have a good season," Hill-Wood told the Sunday Mirror.
"I have 100 percent confidence that Arsene knows what he is doing. He has
proved that and I am not worried at all.
"If he is happy to stay, then we will want him to stay even longer.
"He has been a fantastic asset for this club and achieved remarkable things
for us.
"Indeed, it's mainly due to the success that we've had under Arsene that we
are at a new stadium.
"We would never have been able to build it without him being here.
"His contract ends at the end of next season and it is probable that we will
talk about a new one at the end of this campaign.
"As long as he is happy here, then we are more than happy to keep him.
"In the 10 years he has been here, we have progressed so much as a club. It's
a joy to have him here."
Arsenal's long-term ambitions could be married to a similar desire from the
Frenchman to nurture Theo Walcott.
Wenger has used the 17-year-old prodigy only sparingly so far, but believes
this will be the season when the former Southampton starlet comes of age.
"Wayne Rooney was a boy at 17 and a man at 18. I see Theo in the same light,"
said Wenger.
"I would have played him at the World Cup. In fact, I was surprised he wasn't
picked. I know he should be playing here. Everyday he gets better, wanting to
play.
"I can see him having a major say in The Premiership and the Champions League.
"He could have a major say at this club very soon."
