Many had tipped the 28-year-old to star at the World Cup after a sublime Premiership season with The Gunners, but France's poor championship form has instead continued to rear its ugly head in Germany. Les Bleus have taken just two points from their opening games against outsiders Switzerland and South Korea, and the Gallic genius has taken much of the flak for the results. But Wenger feels the system coach Raymond Domenech has employed thus far, is to blame for the failings. "I feel sorry for Thierry because he was left isolated as a lone striker and did not get enough support," said Wenger. "Thierry can play that role and has done it to good effect, but if the team is not playing well and you do not get service it is impossible. "I still believe France will go through by beating Togo but they must find the right team and formation quickly. "They look like a team which needs confidence and to believe in themselves because they have the quality." France failed miserably as defending champions at the European Championships in 2004, and could again fall at the first hurdle should they draw with the Africans on Friday. But Wenger has revealed the depth of feeling his player endured after the team failed to shine at Euro 2004. "I know Thierry was very upset by what happened in 2004," he continued. "In fact, he thought about finishing with France after that, but that is in the past now and he is focused on winning this World Cup.
