Martin and Ashley both used to be strikers before becoming successful defenders as they progressed through the Gunners youth team and 16 year-old Abu hopes to do the same: "Although I am not a defender, I am a defensive midfielder and am very much focused on the defensive part of the game," he explains. I watched their positioning, how they tried to pass and move and keep everything simple, but I kept getting distracted by Thierry Henry and the other attackers as they poured forward all over Juventus. I had to keep trying to make myself concentrate on the job the midfielders were doing in front of the back four but it was hard not to get distracted on a night like that!" beams the youngster. The midfielder hails from Tadworth near Epsom in Surrey and makes a three-hour round trip journey by train, three times a week to get to the Chingford-based Academy: "I’m doing well at school and if I have to miss training sometimes to get my coursework done that is not a problem for Arsenal. The travelling is OK because I know it is something I have to do. I am taking my GCSEs in May and hope to do well so that I can then dedicate myself 100 per cent to making my career as a footballer. I am really looking forward to next season and being a full-timer. I can’t wait. I hope to become a regular in the Under-18s central midfield and then get as much reserve team experience as I can so that I can keep developing my game," declares Abu, re-emphasising: "I just can’t wait."
