After helping restore Binger-Oney's baseball program to power, Reggie Willits is back in the majors. The former Oklahoma standout and MLB outfielder has accepted a coordinator position with the New York Yankees, he told The Oklahoman on Monday. "It was a position where I was going to get to come back to Oklahoma so many days a month and get to be home with my kids a lot," Willits said. "They worked it out in my contract where my family can go with me a lot in the summer time. It wasn't something I was looking to do, but it was something I felt like I was being led to go so I'm going to give it a shot." Willits is the outfield and baserunning coordinator for the Yankees, where he will try to instill his aggressive style on the basepaths at all levels of the organization. "My job is to put together a baserunning program and to help the outfield prospects keep progressing," Willits said. "The biggest thing I'm going to do is put my aggressive baserunning into their system. They're wanting to get more aggressive on the basepaths. It's going to be something that's a challenge but I think I can do it." In six years with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, Willits stole 40 bases and was thrown out only 17 times. For the past two years, Willits has instilled his aggressive philosophy at Binger-Oney, the hometown of MLB Hall of Famer Johnny Bench. It was an extremely successful tenure as the Bobcats made the state tournament four of the five seasons he coached and won the state championship twice. He said his assistant Randy Smith has been named his replacement. "Whatever job you do in life, you try to leave it in a better state than what it was when you got there and hopefully we did that," Willits said.
