The Angels trimmed it to 4-3 in the sixth when Torii Hunter walked, took
third on Howie Kendrick's and scored on Wells' sacrifice fly. Mark Trumbo's
infield single put runners on first and second. This seemed a good time to
summon switch-hitting Hank Conger (.286) or Alberto Callaspo (.295) to bat
for Jeff Mathis (.194), but Scioscia stuck with Mathis against Cleveland
right-hander Alex White, who was making his second career start. Mathis
struck out.
"The numbers don't show it, but he's hit more hard outs the last
seven games than anyone," Scioscia said of Mathis. "He'd seen [White] a couple
of times.I thought he'd put the ball in play hard.""
