Despite losing Bartolo Colon for most of the year, the starting pitching was brilliant with rookies such as Jered Weaver and Joe Saunders stepping into key roles, and Santana improving in his second year. Santana improved in his second year to lead the staff in wins, while rookies Weaver and Saunders are ready to be regular pieces. Kelvim Escobar suffered from poor run support, but still dominated in stretches. The veteran right-hander did everything from starting to setting up to middle relief to finishing games. But he made his greatest contribution when he supplied a backup role to Shields. Left-hander J.C Romero will not return, while Kevin Gregg has some trade value. Brendan Donnelly will enter his second year of arbitration. In triplicate, the Angels need to score more runs next season to remain competitive, and relying on the situational game will only put the pressure on the pitching staff. The club tried to get a big bat last winter, this past summer and head into the offseason with that still as its No. 1 priority. Free agency is the preferred route for general manager Bill Stoneman, and Alfonso Soriano and Carlos Lee are both available and were two players Stoneman went after at the trading deadline. A better fit might be Torii Hunter, who would also be an upgrade in center. A key piece could be Erick Aybar.
