There are currently two versions of the note in circulation, one first issued in 1999 and the second first issued in 2007. From the first of July only the newer note, bearing the economist Adam Smith will be legal tender. Anyone holding the older version bearing composer Edward Elgar can exchange them at banks. It's thought about one in ten of all 20 pound notes still in circulation are the older version. --
