Pregnant pause to Molik's career
Linda Pearce
July 26, 2011.
ALICIA Molik is determined that the birth of her first child will not
necessarily herald the end of her tennis career, with the former world No. 8
not yet ready to declare herself retired - for a second time.
Molik and her husband Tim Sullivan are believed to be expecting a baby early
in 2012.
The South Australian has been sidelined with health issues since her
second-round loss to Nadia Petrova at Melbourne Park almost six months ago.
Her ranking, which was back inside the top 90 as recently as September, has
tumbled to 309.
As unlikely as another singles return would seem - almost two years into her
comeback from the 12-month retirement after the Beijing Olympics - Tennis
Australia has confirmed that Molik has no plans to retire.
She can activate a special ranking on the basis either of injury - in this
case, a chronic elbow problem - or maternity. The 30-year-old's most public
role of late has been in the TV commentary box.
Reigning US and Australian Open champion Kim Clijsters is the highest-profile
mother on the WTA Tour, while Austrian veteran Sybille Bammer retired earlier
this month. Former No. 1 Lindsay Davenport, who won two small WTA events
during a brief comeback after the birth of her first child, is now expecting
her third.
Meanwhile, top-ranked Australian Samantha Stosur resumes this week after her
deflating first-round Wimbledon upset. The world No. 10 has received a bye
into the second round of the US hardcourt tournament in Stanford, California.
Her Fed Cup teammate, Anastasia Rodionova, has drawn 12-time grand slam
champion Serena Williams, now unseeded.
Rodionova's younger sister, Arina, 21, has been successful in her appeal for
Australian residency, pending a physical clearance, and will soon be able to
represent her adopted country in the four majors.
Arina, who was yesterday named best finals player for the unbeaten Washington
Kastles in World Team Tennis, would then qualify for Australian citizenship
after a further two-year period.
Among the men, Perth 23-year-old Matt Ebden is the second-highest Australian
at No. 139, behind 68th-ranked Bernard Tomic, with Marinko Matosevic at 154
and Lleyton Hewitt 165th after his loss in Atlanta last week.
