Home lender serves Philippoussis with bankruptcy notice Vanda Carson November 23, 2010 THE tennis ace Mark Philippoussis has been hit with a bankruptcy notice after defaulting on his mortgage over his home in the Melbourne suburb of Williamstown. The lender, Perpetual Trustee Company, applied to the Federal Magistrates Court in Sydney yesterday for ''substituted service'' of the bankruptcy notice, which means that Perpetual can formally give the notice to Philippoussis's lawyer or representative. Philippoussis is in the US. The moves to bankrupt Mark Philippoussis come after earlier attempts to repay the mortgage by selling the three-level townhouse failed. He borrowed about $1.2 million from lender General Motors Acceptance Corporati- on (GMAC) in February 2008 to buy the townhouse overlooking Port Phillip Bay, which he shared with his mother, Rossna. This loan was later on-sold to Pepper Home Loans after GMAC withdrew from the Australian market. The chief operating officer for Pepper Homeloans, David Holmes, said that Perpetual was pursuing Philippoussis because the home had sold for $835,000 in November 2009, less than the amount owed to the lender. ''The owners of the loan, GMAC, are continuing to sue Mark, but Perpetual are the lender of record,'' Mr Holmes said. Philippoussis has had six knee operations and it is widely acknowledged that he never reached his full potential.
