Qualifying for the elite eight-woman draw could prove especially fruitful for Stosur after she missed out last year. With mass rankings points on offer in Doha, but none for Stosur to defend, the 26-year-old would secure herself a golden opportunity to finish inside the world's top four. Such a scenario would almost certainly lead to a top-four seeding at the Australian Open in January, meaning the big home hope wouldn't strike a higher-ranked opponent until at least the semi-finals. The absence of the top-ranked Williams from both the Pan Pacific Open and next week's China Open have further boosted Stosur's prospects of Doha qualification. Williams has not played since Wimbledon, foot surgery following an accident in a Hamburg restaurant casting doubts over whether the American superstar will even return at all this year.
