Samantha Stosur January 14, 2004 GOLD COAST, Australia - For a professional athlete, there's nothing better than performing in front of a home crowd… that is, maybe, except for excelling before one. Nineteen-year-old Samantha Stosur did just at the Uncle Tobys Hardcourts on Australia's Gold Coast. With numerous friends and family members - as well as hundreds of local supporters - cheering her on, the Brisbane-born, Gold Coast-residing Stosur blasted her way into her first-ever WTA Tour semifinal, defeating Top 25 players Meghann Shaughnessy and Magui Serna along the way. In the semifinals, the 163rd-ranked Stosur led top seed and world No.10 Ai Sugiyama 3-1 in the third set before falling. Sugiyama would go on to win the tournament. Stosur's already knocking on the door of a Top 100 ranking, having rose to No.119 on the January 12 WTA Singles Rankings. You had a great week here in your hometown. Do you prefer to play in front of a home crowd? Do you feel more pressure? SS: No, I don't feel more pressure. It's gives me a lift more than anything, so I think it's only a positive thing, playing in front of either a local crowd or an Australian home crowd. Either way, I think it's a good thing. You did very well last year at the Australian Open. What are your expectations and preparations going into Melbourne? You've already had a great start. SS: I don't have too many expectations. I've taken a lot of pressure off myself this week by doing that. I plan on going into it like any other tournament, try and play my game, and then it should all take care of itself. It did this week. Last month, you attended a training camp and earned a wildcard into the Open. Do you think that system is better as opposed to being just given one? SS: I think it's good because you're giving it to the in-form player at that time leading up to January. Plus, it gives me a better feeling of earning it rather than someone handing it to me. You've played and defeated some top-ranked players, Conchita, Meghann and Magui. What do you gain most from playing against opponents of such a high calibre? SS: I've learned that I can match them. If I can't beat them, then at least I can match them. I've been able to beat some of them now, so it makes me think that maybe I can be ranked up there as well in the future. That's what I want to try and do. Which do you think is your biggest win? SS: It would have to be Meghann. You have a power game, a very aggressive style of play. Do you model your game after anyone? SS: It's probably more of a combination of players more than anything. I like coming to the net, and now more of the girls are doing that. If you want to get better, I think you need to be aggressive. That's what Serena and the other top players do. As far as my game, I've looked at Philippoussis's game a little bit. He has a big serve, big forehand, power, and is very aggressive. That is what I try to do. You filmed a commercial for (sponsor) Uncle Tobys. What was that like? SS: That was really fun. I met all of the Aussie champion swimmers, well, most of them, except the biggest, Thorpey (Ian Thorpe). It was just a good day. SS: I don't think there's anything unusual compared to everyone else's, just six racquets, more clothes this week because it was so hot. I've had about three changes of tennis clothes. Something to wear afterwards. A spare pair of shoes. And there's some papers and stuff that I don't need, but they're all in there. I'm usually interested in any sport that uses a ball. What are your goals for this year? SS: I want to break the Top 100. If and when I make it, I will reassess my goals. My main goal is to keep playing the way I played here because I've never been able to replicate that consistently for a whole tournament. I want to maintain that level in every tournament I play.
