With the new Serie A season around the corner, Goal.com looks at what clubs
have been up to, and how they are shaping up for 38 rounds of action. In this
part, we consider Fiorentina.
Will the Viola be able to blossom in a full strength Serie A outfit, or will
they wilt under the pressure and return to being mid-table pretenders?
An veritable cloud hangs over the Fiorentinian camp as they prepare for the
coming season. And with it, a question: will it be a stormy season in
Florence, or will the sun break through?
On one hand, there is plenty of excitement. La Viola secured qualification
for the UEFA Cup in spite of the 15 point penalty handed down as a result of
the Calciopoli scandal.
On the other, the club and the Viola faithful will certainly miss the
talismanic Luca Toni whose goalscoring exploits made qualification possible
in the first place.
So, many question marks surround the club as they open up the new term on
level points footing. Who will replace Toni's scoring touch? Does Prandelli
have enough depth in the squad to enjoy a long European run without
neglecting his domestic league duties?
Fiorentina is a club that prides itself on combating adversity. Not too long
ago they were languishing in the doldrums of Serie C only to make a Herculean
charge back to the top level. Prandelli has installed a steely resolve in his
squad who, in turn, play hard until the final whistle.
Not least at the back. The goalkeeping position is in good hands with the
spectacular Sebastian Frey between the sticks. He is probably the best shot
stopper in Serie A. Recovering after two injury-plagued seasons, he stayed
healthy last year and was a major reason factor in the Viola's European
charge.
Captain Dario Dainelli anchors a steady back four that will focus on keeping
opposing strikers off balance and frustrated. Tuscan rumours circulated,
speculating that the player would sign for Juventus, but those tales turned
out to be unfounded as he signed a new contract to keep him at the club for
another four years.
Per Kroldrup partners Dainelli in the center of the defence. The
contorversial Dane is still trying to shake off rumors that he is afraid to
head the ball, having been named as the worst transfer in Premier League
history by the Times of London, following an ill-fated move from Udinese to
Everton.
Still, there are alternatives. Alessandro Gamberini will be keen for starting
appearances as he looks to force his way into both the Fiorentina side and
the national team.
The right side of the back line is patrolled by the dependable Czech
international Tomas Ujfalusi. He has been a mainstay in the lineup for the
last three years.
But he might not be for longer. "Ufo" has the Viola faithful worried after
failing to renew his contract, which ends at the conclusion of this campaign.
Sevilla and Bayern Munich are both apparently keen to secure his services.
Newly signed Belgian International Anthony Vanden Borre will be an ideal
replacement should the Viola decided to cash in on Ujfalusi before he can
leave on a free transfer.
Italian international Manuel Pasquale mans the left side of the defence. His
solid performances have caught the eye of national team manager Roberto
Donadoni, but he faces competition: newly-signed Frederico Balzaretti from
Juventus will be keen to make an impression, and figures to feature in the
back line as well.
There's a void in the middle of the park following the departure of Manuele
Blasi. The midfielder has returned to Juventus after his loan period expired,
his creative play in the midfield now being sorely missed. Prandelli will
hope that the Italian duo of Massimo Gobbi and Michele Pazienza can put in
consistent performances to ease his worries.
Midfield general Roberto Donadel, though, may be the first name on
Prandelli's team sheet. He will count on this engine-room maestro to control
the middle of the park and dictate the pace of the game.
Elsewhere, Franco Semioli figures to be an integral part of Prandelli's plans
as he was brought in to run riot on the right hand side of the pitch. The new
signing from Chievo will be looking for some early explosive performances to
endear himself to the Firenze faithful.
Prandelli is as manager who has a reputation of giving talented youngsters a
chance to strut their stuff: as such, he's likely to give Serbian
international Zfravko Kuzmanovic evert chance to succeed. Whether he can
break into the starting lineup every week, though, remains to be seen.
Newly signed Czech U-19 captain Jan Hable may be too young to cement a
regular place in the lineup but will soak in the valuable experience he will
receive at the Artemo Franchi.
The biggest challenge for Prandelli and the Viola this season will be
replacing the goals of superstar Luca Toni, who left the club for greener
pastures in Germany. His silky touch in front of goal and, of course, his
clinical finishing will be sadly missed and may result in more than a couple
of sleepless nights for Prandelli, especially if the Viola struggle to find
their shooting boots early in the season.
There are more departured up front. Valeri Bojinov, one of Europe's hottest
prospects, has left for Manchester City to join Sven Goran Erickson's
revolution, thus concluding a disappointing final chapter to his Fiorentina
career. Reginaldo also quit the club in the close season to join Parma.
Prandelli will thus count on Adrian Mutu and young dynamo Giampaulo Pazzini
to form what he hopes will be the strikeforce strong enough to compete both
at home and in Europe.
In terms of backup, Arturo Lupoli was signed from Arsenal and will also be
counted on to provide some goals this year. What's more, journeyman Christian
Veiri, making Fiorentina his sixth team in two years, will try to show his
critics that his best days are not behind him.
For the league itself, Fiorentina are being marginalised by some. There is
certain belief among certain Italian pundits that the Serie A will return to
its former glory, with Juventus, Napoli and Genoa returning to offer their
rich, storied histories to the top division. Amidst all the excitement, La
Viola have been somewhat overlooked.
But that won't faze them. Fiorentina will be keen to prove their critics
wrong and show the world that they are a top tier club, while giving their
youngsters a chance to shine in the process. Prandelli is intent on building
a dynasty in the coming years to add another successful chapter in the
Viola's own considerably history.

goal.com对本季fio的预测
门将:Frey是不动先发
後卫:Dainelli和Kroldrup将会是先发中後卫
但Gamberini有先发的潜力
右後卫依然是Ujfalusi
但因未成功续约
因此fio极可能将其出售
但Vanden Borre会是最佳顶替者
Pasquale
