Having scored a sensational hat-trick to open the new Wembley, the Fiorentina striker failed to find the net in the three Group B games in Holland. 「I am disappointed because I was unable to provide the kind of performances I wanted. I played below my usual standards, as some of my teammates also did. 」 The Azzurrini were among the favourites going into the tournament, but dreadful finishing meant they only managed a win, a draw and a defeat to Serbia. 「I can't really say why I didn't give my best. I tried to do what was asked of me. My job was to create space for the trequartisti to push forward.」 The work of Coach Pierluigi Casiraghi came under fire, particularly his decision to only start Giuseppe Rossi and a more attacking formation in the final group game – their only 3-1 win over the Czech Republic. 「Perhaps with another tactical system and a few more through balls I could have played more to my strengths. 「This should not be an alibi, though. We all made mistakes here and everyone has to take their share of the responsibility.」 Although they are out of the competition, there is still the opportunity to qualify for the 2008 Olympic Games with a play-off against Portugal on Thursday. 「There is no point crying over spilt milk now. It is time to look forward and concentrate on the match with Portugal, trying to end this unfortunate adventure in a positive fashion,」 added Pazzini. 「We were unlucky here, as if a few incidents had gone our way instead of everything against us, we would be here talking about a semi-final. Instead… But as I said, there's no point looking back now.」 Even if Italy do reach the Olympics, Pazzini will be ineligible as he was born in 1984 and will be too old by the time the competition comes around. 「It is true that after our elimination I said that would be the end of my Under-21 experience, but that was a moment of great disappointment and anger. I apologise, it was a mistake and now I really want Italy to be where they belong, at the Olympics.」 The play-off is with Portugal, another side that had expected to do much better in the European Championship. 「We have already crossed paths with them several times and know them well. They are more or less the same side we played in the Under-19 Final three years ago.
