Fiorentina had a terrible start to the season, but with two wins on the trot under Coach Sergio Buso, they had caught Inter on 13 points and were ready to stage a shock overtaking manoeuvre. Toldo immediately proved he is back with a spectacular one-handed reaction save on Martin Jorgensen's point-blank finish from six yards. Cristiano Lupatelli slapped away an Alvaro Recoba free kick, then Toldo performed more fine blocks on Miccoli and Ariatti efforts. Fiorentina were taking control and Toldo could do nothing after 26 minutes when Miccoli's corner kick was nodded in by Dario Dainelli. It was a free header, as Ivan Cordoba allowed the defender to get in front of him. Inter tried to fight back in the second half and Dejan Stankovic flicked an Andy van der Meyde corner kick on to the side-netting with his heel. They threw on Obafemi Martins and the young Nigerian managed to skip past the 'keeper, but William Viali followed the move and was ready for a goalline clearance. The Nerazzurri were definitely more aggressive in the second half and Stankovic again went close when his swerving long-range strike was punched out for a corner. On the hour mark Lupatelli flew to palm Cristiano Zanetti's fierce drive over the bar after some good build-up play from Adriano. From the resulting corner Martins had his shot charged down by defenders from seven yards. Fiorentina now mainly played on the counter-attack and Miccoli's snapshot skimmed the woodwork, while later on his fierce drive slammed the frame of t he goal with the aid of Toldo's fingertips. Lupatelli performed a fine save on Esteban Cambiasso, but from the resulting Ze Maria corner Cristiano Zanetti touched on the ball for Adriano to nod in the equaliser unmarked at the back post. Adriano had been quiet up until then, but one of his trademark free kicks from 30 metres was only pushed into the path of Martins, who somehow ballooned it off target from three yards. Inter were left in ten men for the closing stages after Dejan Stankovic was shown his second yellow card of the game.
