In addition, the Mandopop(华语流行乐) star — a colloquial(口语的) abbreviation (缩写) for artists(艺术工作者) singing “Mandarin(华语的) popular music” — donated(捐赠) NT$500,000 to Christian(基督徒的) relief(救济) organization(组织) World Vision Taiwan, for a new scholarship fund(基金), titled(命名) the Dream Fulfillment Scholarship Project(圆梦奖学金计画). The scholarship winners were selected(挑选) from among 40,000 of World Vision's sponsored(赞助的) children in Taiwan based on their discovered talents or exceptional(卓越的) academic(学术) performance(表现). “Everyone has a dream,” said A-mei during the inaugural(开始的；就任的) press conference(记者会). “Many children have talents that are recognized(被赏识) by their teachers, or they have exceptional grades. Unfortunately(不幸地), those talents are so often wasted(浪费) simply(只是) because the children lack(缺乏) the resources(资源) to keep on nurturing(滋养；使学习更多) them,” she added(补充说明). Now, with the help of the Dream Fulfillment Scholarship Project, these children are awarded a chance(机会) to become specialized(专业的) in their talents and to have their dreams come true(实现), she pointed out(指出). A-mei is also known as(以..而知名) Chang Hui-mei and her aboriginal(原住民的) name Gulilai Amit (A-mit). Born into the Puyuma tribe(部落) and a family with nine siblings(兄弟姊妹) in a remote(偏远的) village in Taiwan, she encountered(遇见；邂逅) many of the same challenges(挑战) that the awardees (受奖者) face(面对；遇到) every day. Her hard work and magnetic(有磁性的；有吸引力的) personality(特质) allowed(允许) her to rise(出人头地) above these humble(卑微的) beginnings and to the top of the Mandopop charts in 1996.
