This time, it wasn't hit for a leg-breaking line drive. But that was the only bright spot for Karstens and the Yankees in an ugly 12-0 loss to the Baltimore Orioles last night. Karstens gave up five runs, including a grand slam to Aubrey Huff, in only three innings and the rest of the bullpen compounded the damage to snap the Yankees' four-game winning streak. "It was just one of those game that you're glad it's over with," manager Joe Torre said. The defeat was somewhat overshadowed by the pregame ceremony and tributes at Yankee Stadium to honor the passing of Hall of Fame shortstop and longtime Yankee announcer Phil Rizzuto, who died late Monday night at the age of 89. But what couldn't be obscured was that the Yankees fell five games behind the Boston Red Sox in the American League East. The Yankees, who came into the game leading the majors in every hitting category since the All-Star break, had only two hits last night. Though the Orioles pitchers combined to issue eight walks, no Yankees baserunner made it past second base. The best the Yankees could have hoped for was that Karstens -- starting in place of Roger Clemens, who was serving a five-game suspension for throwing at the Toronto Blue Jays' Alex Rios in his last start -- would keep them in the game while the Yankees' explosive offense did the rest. After all, the Yankees had scored 116 runs in their previous 10 home games, the most over a 10-game home span in franchise history. They had scored at least seven runs in each of those 10 games. But last night they couldn't get anything going against Orioles starter Daniel Cabrera, who had allowed four runs in the first two innings of his last start against the Yankees in Baltimore on July 29. But last night the Yankees did not get a hit off Cabrera until Hideki Matsui singled in the fourth inning. "He was throwing a lot of strikes," Robinson Cano said. "He was a different guy than he was in Baltimore." For Karstens, it was his first start since coming off the disabled list on Aug. 1 after suffering the broken leg on April 28 that sidelined him for three months, though he had made two relief appearances since then. After an easy first inning, he stumbled through the second and third, loading the bases with one out to set up Huff's grand slam. "It came down to me not throwing strikes tonight," Karstens said. "I was falling behind, and you can't do it." Karstens was able to finish the third inning but was removed from the game and replaced by Jim Brower, who pitched two poor innings of relief, allowing six runs -- four earned -- to put the game out of reach of a comeback. "I feel really we would have (come back)," Brower said, "if I would have been able to come in and put up a couple zeros, get the momentum back on our side." He left with the bases loaded and no outs in the sixth and was replaced by Ron Villone, who allowed all three inherited runners to score to make it 11-0 Baltimore after six. Karstens could be sent down today if the Yankees decide they want to bolster the tired bullpen with a fresh arm. Edwar Ramirez would be an option to replace Karstens.
